Thesis Project Blog 2/2

Week 0 - Design Brief

Working Title Connection: Urban Loneliness My work is about human connection. Loneliness is a ubiquitous social issue. How do we build friendship circles when we move to a new place for education or work? How do we create networks that can sustain us emotionally? I want to make a sculptural installation to arouse people’s concern. As scientists said, “understanding why loneliness exists can help ease it.” The installation provides a poetic, subtle interactive understanding of loneliness in our transient existences. Why do I want to try art in this project? First, I am comfortable and interested in art practice. I really appreciate art work. Second, art is a suitable approach for me to express in this domain. Urban Loneliness is a big topic that is a discussion topic rather than a specific pain-point. Art is form for me to express my thoughts and research about this topic, and I really want to convey them to my audience and I want my audience to feel it and think about it.

Challenge:

- Remain simple or add on digital part? How can I make it deep and thoughtful but also poetic and elegant? E.g. Real-time Twitter Data?(keywords searching, username initial?

- Quantity needs to reconsider and their setup

- Sound and atmosphere - Representative meaning? battery

- person, metal stick - city building, rotate- routine

  • start with scale, think about how related to your body with you hand. processing of construction and deconstruction.the choice of object is much about intimacy, about lack of familiar.

  • things are mass-production, so familiar. …be incredibly amount of value, by the way it be treated, ,by the way it be placed by the way you approached it. create kind of strangely intimacy experience in a very public space, but challenge how do you create intimacy in a space that is completely public.

  • go through string of experience, the transition of the things, not the thing itself.

  • mechanism, try to understand where we are in time and space. how complicated the idea is.

object, meaning, memory, time, image

  • Cornell ornithology lab “How to get someone to look and observe for 10 min? “10 min of observations a very long time for person to longing and observe, also for visual art.

  • I am gonna to put the sculpture at the location where you have to walk through it. The walk itself becomes like a negative space in the sculpture. And then you have this very dynamic experience when you see it from far away. And then in perspective, it grows. And then you actually are in the interior of it. And then you exit it.

Architectural critics anticipated that modern life would change the sensation of space. Almost 30 years ago, the French anthropologist Marc Augé coined the word non-place to describe a family of transitional locations where people’s sense of self becomes suppressed or even vanishes. Non-places include airports, hotels, shopping malls, supermarkets, and highways. There’s a sorrow to these sites, because unlike legitimate ones, human beings never really occupy non-places; they simply move through them on their way to “anthropological places,” as Augé called them, such as schools, homes, and monuments.

when viewing my work you, as have to walk through it. The walk itself becomes like a negative space in the sculpture. And then you have this very dynamic experience when you see it from far away. And then in perspective, it grows. And then you actually are in the interior of it. And then you exit it.

so from the outside, you can see the overall setting. The setting, How I want to set my units influences the overall impression. The overall first impression, the out frames

the scaffolding takes the form of an Arch, framing the spectacle itself, and referring to one of the most fundamental forms in Architecture–the Arch. The ‘building’ is like a forest. It is put together by these organic similar but not identical units. besides, the space is a space “'in between“, intimacy in a public space, has frame but not solid.

Week 5 - Prototyping

Reviews:

Stability: Standard Manufactured Wire Set

Set up Arrangement: Still trying but it is flexible (not a big problem cuz it will only affect the project position)

Collecting Stories: Ongoing

Week 5 - preparing for mid term review

Week 6 - top priority

Stability Solved: Changed the thickness of copper wires (2mm to 10mm) & structure changed

Battery Durability Test: 19:58 - 20:08(8maganets), 20:11 - 20:41 (8maganets), 20:44 - 21:04,21:13 - 22:08
